Sheffield United boss Derek Dooley has gained an MBE in the New Year Honours.

From the humble backstreets of Pitsmoor he has gone on to become a soccer hero.

But his triumphs are more off the pitch - his goal scoring ended when his right leg was amputated at the age of 23 while he was playing for arch rivals Wednesday.

Mr Dooley, who has been associated with the Blades for 25 years, said: "I never believed I would get this honour.

"I am fiercely proud of benig a Sheffield lad. This honour is a bit special for me."

Professor David Hall, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and Professor of Community Paediatrics at Sheffield has been knighted.

Suzanne Hinchliffe, director of nursing at Barnsley District General Hospital has been honoured with an OBE.

She told BBC News Online: "I am overwhelmed. I am in my 24th year of nursing and it is still fantastic."

Her team has developed training for student nurses, greater patient input into services and a higher profile for nursing staff.

MBEs have gone to David Carley, who lives in Sheffield and manages the Playing for Success Parnterships Team; Terence Catton for services to young people in Barnsley; Anita Chapman, of Doncaster, for services to archery.

An MBE will also be received by Rosemary Johnson for services to the women's voluntary sector in Sheffield; Gordon Padley, of Sheffield, for services to netball.

Keith Parker, of Rotherham, operations manager of the Coal Authority, and Irving Goldsby-West, a Justice of the Peace in South Yorkshire, are also named among the MBE honours.
