Hundreds of pigs killed in fire
Pigs on farm
Help is needed to house the remaining animals
More than 600 pigs were killed when fire destroyed a farm building in North Yorkshire.

Firefighters were called to Backston Grange Pig Breeders at Helmsley just after 0200 GMT on Tuesday to find the building well alight.

About 40 sows have been saved, but one of the partners in the firm, Robert Wilson, says that help is now needed to house the animals that have been saved.

He told BBC Radio York: "We tried to save what pigs we could, but we were forced back by the flames."

'It's been a nightmare'

He added: "After that we had to go round and all the sows in distress had to be destroyed, it's just been a nightmare."

More of the animals suffering trauma may have to be destroyed.

Now Mr Wilson is appealing for help in finding accommodation for the remaining animals.

Offers of help can be made to BBC North Yorkshire on 01904 641351 and we will put you in touch.
