Coastguards monitor stricken ship

The Sena Deniz was carrying timber
A Turkish cargo ship is still without power off the Cornish coast after a fire in her engine room on Thursday.

The 13,000 tonne Sena Deniz is drifting off Trevose Head while repairs are carried out.

The ship, which is carrying a load of timber, reported the fire when it was 15 miles north west of Newquay.

It is hoped the Turkish vessel will be able to make her own way to Bristol if she can restart her engines.

The ship made a distress calls 15 miles from shore

Coastguards in Swansea are monitoring the situation.

A Royal Navy helicopter and two lifeboats were despatched to help the vessel after it sent out a distress call just after 1400 GMT.

The fire was eventually put out by the crew who doused the hold with carbon dioxide.

Two of the 24 personnel on board were airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Treliske, Truro, after receiving minor injuries.

Two firefighters from Falmouth were later brought to the ship with thermal imaging equipment to monitor the temperature of the engine room and ensure the area was safe.
