| Monday, 16 December, 2002, 14:42 GMT Dando killer's latest appeal refused ![]() Barry George says his conviction is 'unsafe' Barry George, the man jailed for life for the murder of TV presenter Jill Dando, has failed in his latest legal move to overturn his murder conviction. The 42-year-old has been refused permission to take his appeal to a higher court. In its ruling, the House of Lords has now refused his legal team permission to appeal. George, who claims his conviction is "unsafe", was sentenced to life imprisonment in July 2001.
He was found guilty of the April 1999 shooting of the BBC Crimewatch presenter on the steps of her home in Fulham, south west London. In July the Court of Appeal rejected his attempt to overturn the conviction based on identification evidence. At his trial it was revealed a single speck of residue from the gun used to kill Jill Dando had been found in the pocket of his coat. The particle was a perfect match with others found in the TV presenter's hair, according to the prosecution. Forensic scientists also found a single strand of fibre from George's trousers that proved he had been in contact with his victim. | See also: 30 Jul 02 | UK 29 Jul 02 | UK 29 Jul 02 | UK Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
