Vomiting virus cases rising
Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Five wards closed last week are open again
The number of patients and staff infected by the winter vomiting virus at a Norfolk hospital is still rising.

Over the weekend the number of patients affected rose to 120 from 96 on Friday.

More than 80 staff have also called in sick.

Last week five medical wards were closed to admissions and transfers in order to contain the outbreak.

They are all now open again, but other wards have been affected.

Infection control

The hospital is having daily meetings to monitor the problem.

Chief executive Richard Venning said he hoped the end of the outbreak was in sight.

"I think it is encouraging that the original five wards that were closed are open for admissions again, though in some of them odd patients are in a single room or a bay," he said.

Friends and family of patients are being asked not to visit medical wards as staff deal with an outbreak of the bug.

Once the first case was identified, the control of infection team brought in measures such as extensive hand washing, use of alcohol rub and the control of patient and staff movements.
