Drinking ban hailed a success
Pint of beer
Police can arrest you for drinking in public
An experimental drinking ban in some areas of Oxford has been hailed as a success.

Oxford City Council introduced the six new alcohol-free zones in mid-November - giving the police powers to make those drinking in public hand over their can or bottle.

The measures are designed to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Anyone failing to comply with the request faces arrest and a fine of up to 500.

'Ban effective'

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said the force had already used the new powers over 50 times, mostly in the city centre and along the Cowley Road.

Officers have not yet arrested anyone under the scheme.

The council says the bans are already proving very effective in combating street violence and are helping to make the city safer.
