Hospital tells visitors to stay away
Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital
Six wards are closed to new admissions at Wonford
Managers at a Devon hospital have urged visitors to stay away after problems caused by a vomiting and diarrhoea virus grew.

The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital has asked visitors not to come unless their trip is absolutely necessary.

A spokesman said the hospital had six wards closed to new admissions on Thursday, which was double the figure on Monday.

More than 30 patients and over 50 staff have been hit by the Norwalk virus and a growing number of operations are being postponed.

Visitors risk bringing the bug into the hospital - and taking it home with them

Steve Astbury, the hospital's deputy chief executive, said: "With the virus so prevalent across the community, many of the patients we are currently admitting either have the diarrhoea and vomiting bug or have been exposed to it.

"This means that, despite applying the most rigorous infection control measures, we are struggling to contain the spread of the virus to other patients and to our staff.

"We appeal to our local community to stay away from the hospital, unless your visit is strictly necessary."

He said people should still come for emergency treatment, or if an appointment had been made.

"But if you are coming just to visit a friend or relative then please think twice, especially if you are ill with the bug or have been in contact with someone who is.

"You risk bringing the bug into the hospital - and taking it home with you."
