| Friday, 6 December, 2002, 11:52 GMT Police warn of drug rape danger ![]() Police warn people not to leave drinks unattended Rape victims are being urged to come forward and report incidents as part of a police campaign in Coventry. Coventry police have launched the campaign to try to reduce the number of drug rapes in the city. Over the last two years 326 of the 5,000 drug-assisted rapes reported to the National Drug Rape Trust were in the Midlands. Detective Constable Shaun Gould said police believed there were more incidents that had not been reported.
"Drug-assisted rape is not endemic but it is occurring in the West Midlands. "Because of the nature of this crime, we do not believe the number of reported offences accurately reflects the scale of the problem. "Where offences do occur, I would encourage people to come forward as soon as possible after the incident and report the circumstances to the police. "We are committed to prosecuting offenders and providing understanding and support to those who suffer this despicable crime." Coventry police are urging people not to leave their drinks unattended and always have friends around them they can trust when they are out socialising. Police will be using local radio stations to get their message across. | See also: 20 Nov 02 | England 10 Dec 01 | UK 07 Aug 01 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
