| Wednesday, 4 December, 2002, 15:36 GMT 'Expensive' factory sheds jobs ![]() The firm makes bathroom products More than 100 people are to lose their jobs at a Stoke-on-Trent ceramics firm. Managers at Qualceram Shires said the Leek Road factory in Hanley, which makes ceramic bathroom products, was too expensive to run. Some production will be moved to the firm's plant in nearby Longton, the rest will be sent abroad. However, managers say there is little prospect of switching any of the Hanley jobs to Longton. Trading difficult Qualceram said trading conditions were difficult and that it wanted to safeguard production at its other factories. The job losses are the latest in a series in the Potteries. Last November, 250 people were made redundant at Royal Doulton. That followed last February's announcement that 1,000 jobs were to go at the same firm. | See also: 27 Sep 02 | England 13 Feb 02 | England 07 Nov 01 | Business Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
