Search for source of e-coli outbreak
Busy Bears Nursery
Investigations into the cause of the outbreak continue
Environmental health teams are trying to locate the source of an e-coli outbreak at a North Yorkshire nursery.

Parents of children at the Busy Bears Nursery in Skipton say they are confident everything is being done to tackle the outbreak.

Five nursery children have been diagnosed with diarrhoea caused by the e-coli 0157 bacteria.

Two of the youngsters are recovering in hospital, one at Airedale Hospital in Keighley and the other at St James's Hospital in Leeds.

Parents unconcerned

One mother told BBC North Yorkshire: "The nursery have been very good about it.

"My son has been screened and he's alright.

"I am happy with what's going on."

Another mother, whose son also goes to the nursery, said: "He seems okay so I am not worried.

Kidney failure

"The nursery have reassured us.

"If the nursery opens again next week he'll be going back."

All 23 staff and 143 children are being screened for signs of infection.

E-coli 0157 is the most serious form of the bug and and can lead to acute kidney failure.

  • An investigation by the local environmental health unit later concluded that the source of the outbreak was "outside the nursery." It found the infection was introduced into the nursery where it was spread by person to person contact. A spokesman told the BBC they were "generally happy with standards at the nursery." They also recommended that nurseries should have "a clear exclusion policy for children with gastrointestinal symptoms and these should be rigorously applied." This guidance has been issued to all playgroups and nurseries in North Yorkshire.
