Civilian police wanted for beat duty
Officers on the beat
Community support officers will have detention powers
West Yorkshire police have launched a recruitment drive for new civilian officers who they hope will offer a high visibility presence on the beat.

It is one of 27 forces to receive government funding to introduce Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs).

West Yorkshire will have 60 PCSOs who will be deployed initially in Leeds and Bradford.

It is also one of six police forces selected to pilot a scheme to give the civilian police officers the power to detain people for up to 30 minutes.

Crime reduction

Police believe PCSOs will provide reassurance to local communities.

Detective Chief Superintendent Grahame Bullock, head of West Yorkshire police's community safety department, said: "This really is a fantastic opportunity for people to make a worthwhile contribution to their community.

"It is also a great career opportunity within the organisation and all PCSOs will receive tailored community safety training, which will continue over time."

Community officers will have limited powers but can advise on crime reduction and Neighbourhood Watch projects.

They can also help with youth and schools issues.

The force has said PCSOs will not replace police officers.
