Secretary of the Fire Brigades Union in West Yorkshire, Sean Cahill, told BBC News Online: "Now it's the weekend people have time to come up to us to express their support. "Other unions have been talking to us, the public has been coming to our picket lines. "They have been dropping money in our buckets and bringing food out with them." Road accident There have been 250 calls to the West Yorkshire fire emergency control room since the latest strike began, with 76 deployments. One of those was to an accident on Friday at 1314 GMT on the southbound carriageway of the M1 between junctions 40 and 41 at Kirkhamgate. But the casualty, a 60-year-old man from Leeds, was dead before emergency teams arrived. MoD spokesman Captain Dickie Hawkins told BBC News Online: "We have had no major incidents to stretch our resources. "The lads are gaining confidence with experience but are not getting complacent." |
