The celebration, involving the Dioceses of Newcastle and Durham, is being held at the Hatton Gallery, at Newcastle University, on Saturday. There are now more than 1,000 women deacons in the Church of England, and approximately half the intake at Durham's theological college are women next year. But even though more women are entering the ministry every year, women priests say there are still structural inequalties within the Anglican Church. Reverend Caroline Dick, from Durham Diocese, told BBC Radio Newcastle there was still more to be done. She said: "There is a huge amount to celebrate but there is an awful long way to go as well as well. "The next big hurdle we still have to face in the Church of England is passing legislation to allow women to become bishops." | See also: 16 Nov 01 | England 09 Jul 00 | Politics Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
