| Thursday, 21 November, 2002, 21:14 GMT Work continues on fire-hit cathedral ![]() Investigators believe the fire was set deliberately Work is continuing on the restoration of Peterborough Cathedral which was badly damaged by a fire a year ago. The fire in November 2001 left the inside of the historic cathedral coated with a layer of oily soot. Smoke damage has meant every inch of stonework and every window must be cleaned. Mike Sketch, of the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society - which donated 10,000 to the restoration fund the day after the fire - said more work is needed.
"There's an awful lot of cleaning to be done, and of course the window to restore," he told the BBC. "Looking inside the cathedral now, you can see they're getting on really well." Cathedral supporters have raised more than 1m, but more is needed to complete the restoration. The fire started under a set of chairs next to the organ loft and went on to cause more than 1m worth of damage. Most of the restoration work should be finished by Easter, but the work may be not be completed until November 2003. Police believe the fire was started deliberately when a tray of candles was set alight next to some plastic chairs. Police are still looking for those responsible. | See also: 01 Oct 02 | England 23 Nov 01 | England 30 Jan 98 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
