Designs for Liverpool's waterfront "architectural signature" were unveiled on Monday.

The four designs for the city's Fourth Grace were described as "stunning visions" by city leaders.

Created by four internationally renowned architects the designs were being put on show at an exhibition in the city.

The "grace" that is chosen will complement the three existing ones - the Liver, the Cunard and the Port of Liverpool buildings.

Models, images and virtual "fly-throughs" have been developed to offer visitors to the exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery a clear idea of what the grace will be like.

Sir Joe Dwyer, chairman of the city centre regeneration company Liverpool Vision, said: "We set our sights high and our ambitions have been more than matched by the quality and originality of the four shortlisted submissions."

Councillor Mike Storey, leader of Liverpool City Council, said the development offers a "once in a lifetime opportunity".

'Exciting designs'

"We want the Fourth Grace to be a statement of intent - that Liverpool is a world-class city with world-class architecture fitting for the 21st century.

"I know that there is enormous interest in this issue and I would urge as many people as possible to let us have their views on these exciting designs."

The schemes, which will include offices, apartments and retail facilities, have been designed by architects Lord Rogers, Lord Foster, Will Alsop and Edward Cullinan.

It is hoped that the winning design will be named before Christmas.
