Airport expansion plans unveiled
Birmingham International Airport
Alternative plans have been developed
Alternative plans for expansion at Birmingham International Airport have been unveiled.

Government proposals for a second runway at the airport have already prompted protests from local residents.

The scale of the Whitehall proposals, which include an extension to the existing runway and building another longer one nearby, would mean the demolition of more than 100 houses in two villages.

But an alternative option, developed by the airport itself, was announced on Tuesday.

Cautious welcome

The plans still include a runway extension, but suggest a shorter second runway.

If given the go ahead, it would drastically reduce the number of houses to be demolished.

Campaigners opposed to the second runway have given the latest plans a cautious welcome.

Angela Dawson, who lives in the nearby village of Bickenhill, said: "I don't know whether this is just a way out to please everybody and still get the extension they were after.

"But whatever, I look forward to it with a bit more hope."

'Improving technology'

According to the airport, the new scheme would also mean less noise.

Brian Summers, from Birmingham International Airport, said: "With the steps we are taking, with the improving technology of aircraft, we believe we can substantially reduce the impact envisaged in the government proposals."

It is thought the government will look at the alternative plan.

Meanwhile councillors in Solihull are expected to back the government expansion plans.
