| Thursday, 31 October, 2002, 15:23 GMT The UK's 'hardest working town' ![]() Working hours have been studied across Great Britain The town with the longest working hours in Britain has been named by a survey. Workers in the North Yorkshire town of Selby put in 44.9 hours each week - four hours more than the national average, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) revealed. A spokesman for the ONS was unable to offer any reason as to why Selby, which has a population of 12,000, has such a long working week. "In any table of averages someone has to come top," he said. "This time it just happens to be Selby." Commuting Another part of the survey shows that even though they put in long hours, Selby workers are unlikely to be well rewarded for their efforts. The average weekly wage in the North Yorkshire County Council area is 403. This compares with the national average of 465. Commuting to York might provide slightly better wages. Workers within the City of York Council area earn an average of 432. | See also: 29 Aug 02 | Business 25 Jul 02 | UK 09 Jul 02 | Health Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
