| Wednesday, 30 October, 2002, 17:22 GMT Teenager helps police sting ![]() Ten shops were caught in the sting A teenage girl acted as an "undercover officer" to expose shop owners selling alcohol to underage customers. The girl, 16, was involved in two police operations during July and last week. She attempted to buy alcohol from 13 off-licences and shops - and was successful on 10 occasions. "The girl was served without any indication of asking for proof of age," said Inspector Tony Smith from Lincolnshire Police.
The girl took part in the sting with her parents' permission. Inspector Smith said it was not possible that shop attendants thought she was more than 18 years old. "She did look underage without a doubt. "No make-up, no fancy clothes, just a straight-forward 16-year-old girl." "It is a great concern to me, we expect more from our licensees. "They do have a place in our communities and they should be more responsible." Inspector Smith confronted the guilty licensees and issued them with a stern warning. "They were apologetic and defensive and I hope to get their support in the future. "There is reluctance by some licensees to ask for age, but I have made it clear to them this sort of lack of community care, lack of social responsibility, will be met with prosecution." | See also: 23 Apr 02 | England 10 May 01 | Health 01 Mar 00 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
