| Tuesday, 29 October, 2002, 16:18 GMT Free offer on unwanted cars ![]() Motorists struggle to sell cars for scrap Unwanted cars are being taken away free of charge to prevent them being dumped on the streets. Officials in Great Yarmouth are offering the service for one week to deter motorists from simply parking disused vehicles and leaving them on the road. It is estimated that more than 1,000 cars will be dumped on the town's streets this year. Part of the problem is the collapse of the scrap metal market which has meant many dealers will no longer accept unwanted cars. Borough councillor Jim Sprimplin said car dumping had a lot of hidden costs. He said: "It means work for then police, it means work for the fire brigade because a lot of them are set alight and it means work for the people who sweep the roads because of the broken glass." | See also: 04 Jul 02 | Wales 06 Aug 01 | UK 23 Aug 00 | UK 04 Oct 98 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
