Baby products jobs move to China
JobCentre
Almost 100 jobs will go from the Cramlington factory
Almost 100 jobs are going at a Northumberland baby care products factory.

The Mayborn Group says 98 jobs will go when it moves production to China.

It is the final stage of a relocation process which started last year.

The company says the move follows poor performance at Cramlington, despite efforts by the workforce.

Shock news

Michael Samuel, Mayborn's managing director, said the job losses were regrettable.

He said: "In recent years, the baby products division - the larger of Mayborn's two operating divisions - has been carried by its highly successful Sangenic nappy disposal system brand, which is manufactured in Mansfield.

"The relocation of further manufacturing to China from Northumberland will ensure that the division is best placed to deliver sustainable growth on a competitive, profitable basis, capitalising on the continuing strength of its brands."

A spokesman for Northumberland County Council said the jobs announcement had come as a shock.

He said: "We were unaware of the company's decision. But we will be seeking talks to see if there is anything we can do change their minds."

The company is moving to a purpose-built complex in the Chinese province of Guangdong.

The switch from Northumberland will save the company about 500,000 a year.

Consultation with staff at Cramlington will begin later this week.
