| Wednesday, 23 October, 2002, 16:36 GMT 17:36 UK Protest held over airport plans ![]() The protest was the second to be staged More than 40 tractors held up motorists using a busy trunk road, as farmers and villagers protested against plans for a new airport. The demonstration was held along the A45, near the village of Stretton in Warwickshire, one of many which will be affected if proposals for an airport in the county go ahead. The Government plans to build the two-runway airport near the A45 and M6 between Coventry and Rugby. Protest organiser Peter Lewis said he was pleased with the turn out.
"I hope we don't antagonise people by holding this protest. "We hope that the national press will take hold of this issue and give us some support." The protest is the second to be held, after thousands of people from nearby villages turned out against the plans on Sunday. The consultation period, organised by Warwickshire County Council, ends in six weeks and more demonstrations are planned. A spokesman from the council said the majority of residents were against plans for the airport. | See also: 18 Oct 02 | England 16 Oct 02 | England 13 Sep 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
