Vintage Norfolk Broads photos sold
Emerson photograph: Courtesy of Sotheby's
A Norfolk Broads photo auctioned at Sotheby's
Historic Victorian photographs of the Norfolk Broads have been sold at an auction in New York for more than 14,000.

The 39 images, which document late 19th century life on the Broads, were taken by the pioneering photographer Peter Emerson.

They went up for auction at Sotheby's, New York, on Wednesday and made 14,684 ($22,705).

Mr Emerson, who lived in Southwold in Suffolk, is seen as one of the great landscape photographers of the Victorian age.

The photographs were among 212 vintage collections sold by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The whole sale raised 1.7m ($2.6m).

Clare Agate, senior librarian at the Millennium Library in Norwich - which has a collection of Peter Emerson photographs and books - said people still consulted the library about him.

"There is definitely still an interest in him and Victorian photography," she said.

"We have people in here for example doing dissertations on him."

She said some of the photographs can be looked at via the library's web site.
