| Monday, 21 October, 2002, 16:06 GMT 17:06 UK Bird strike forces emergency landing ![]() The plane could not land in the East Midlands A passenger plane was forced to make an emergency landing after a bird flew into one of its engines. The low-cost flight to Malaga had just taken off from East Midlands airport when the pilot noticed an engine problem and decided to shut it down. However, foggy conditions made it impossible to return to the Castle Donington airport. The bmibaby flight was diverted to Manchester, where it made the emergency landing. Checks The incident happened at about 1030 BST on Monday, shortly after the flight carrying 126 passengers had taken off for Spain. A spokeswoman for East Midlands airport said a number of checks had been made on the plane before it took off and everything had seemed fine. She said investigations into the cause of the engine problem were continuing, but it appeared that the plane had been affected by a bird strike. No one was injured and the plane landed safely at Manchester, where passengers were led safely from the plane. | See also: 09 Sep 02 | Scotland 23 Aug 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
