Man jailed for rioting in Oldham
A 22-year-old man has been jailed for two-and-a-half years for taking part in the Oldham riots.

Hamid Sharif, of Oldham, pleaded guilty to riot, when he appeared at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

On Thursday he became the 14th person to be sentenced for the rioting in May 2001.

Two men are still waiting to be sentenced and a further 37 have yet to stand trial.

The riots in Oldham happened over five days, and cost Greater Manchester Police 2.25m.

The court was told Sharif, a father-of-two, from Park Road, Glodwick, was caught on video throwing missiles at the police.

It was however, accepted he did not play a leading part in orchestrating the violence.
