Woman dies in flat fire
Firefighter breathing gear
Breathing apparatus was used during the incident
A woman has died in a fire at a flat in Torquay.

The fire, in flats on Abbey Road in the town centre, broke out shortly before 1400 BST.

Thirty firefighters were called to tackle the blaze, which police believe could have been suspicious.

A man who was in the property was treated for smoke inhalation.

As with any fire, we have to treat it as suspicious from the outset

Fire crews from Torquay, Paignton and Totnes were called to the scene.

There were fears that other residents were trapped inside but, after an extensive search of the property, Devon Fire and Rescue Service said they were satisfied it had been evacuated.

Devon Fire and Rescue Service said the situation is under control and the operation is being scaled down.

Keeping evidence

Sergeant Alan Mobbs of Devon and Cornwall Police said officers will be investigating the cause of the fire.

He said: "As with any fire, we have to treat it as suspicious from the outset so we don't lose any evidence.

"We have an officer from the arson task force who will be going down to the scene and liaising with the fire service to ensure no evidence is lost.

"But we will be treating it as of doubtful origin until we know anything to the contrary."
