Milly's parents launch new charity

The parents of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler have launched a charity to educate young people about personal safety.

Thirteen-year-old Amanda, known as Milly, went missing in March while walking home from Walton-on-Thames railway station, Surrey.

Last month, her body was found 25 miles away in remote woodland near Fleet, Hampshire.

The charity, called Milly's Fund, was launched on Tuesday at a memorial service in her honour at Guildford Cathedral in Surrey.

Milly's mother, Sally Dowler, said in a statement: "Not only will the charity help to preserve Milly's memory, but it will also provide guidance and training to young teenagers."

The fund will provide training in risk assessment to teenagers and to their teachers and youth workers.

It will aim to educate early teens, on the brink of more independent lives, about the risk of certain situations and how to protect themselves.

Saxophone tribute

Milly's grieving father Bob paid a moving tribute to his daughter at the memorial service.

The IT consultant, his wife Sally and Milly's sister Gemma, 16, were joined by more than 1,000 friends and well-wishers.

Milly's best friend Hannah MacDonald read a tribute and her uncle Peter sang solo "You'll never walk alone".

The saxophone group at Heathside School, Weybridge, where Milly was a pupil, played during the Church of England service.

Balloon release

Millions of television viewers have seen news broadcasts of home video footage of Milly, an enthusiastic member of the group, playing her saxophone.

The Bishop of Dorking Ian Brackley gave an address which commended both adults and youngsters to support Milly's fund.

Many staff, pupils and parents from Milly's school, where Mrs Dowler taught, attended as well as officers from Surrey Police who are leading the hunt for the schoolgirl's killer.

After the service, Gemma was due to release balloons into the sky outside the cathedral to mark the launch of Milly's Fund.

A private funeral will be held after Milly's remains have been released by the police.
