The roof of St Wendreda's Church in March is decorated with 120 carved wooden angels which are 400-years-old. But in the past few years it has been plagued by Death Watch Beetle. It has cost 130,000 to carry out the repair work needed to save the roof. 'Incredible experience' The parish priest the Reverend Peter Baxandall said the campaign to raise money for the repairs started with a BBC Songs of Praise programme at the church in 1996. The Angel Roof Fund raised 25,000 and other groups and charities provided the rest of the money. "We are very grateful to the people who supported us," he said. "Looking at the angels is certainly an incredible experience." Mr Baxandall said the church still needed to raise cash for further repairs. Anyone who is able to make a donation can write to Reverend Baxandall at The Rectory, 21 Wimblington Road, March, PE15 9QW. | See also: 30 Sep 02 | England 27 Sep 02 | Wales 24 Sep 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
