Dozens of people have spent the night away from their homes after a fire at a bus depot which destroyed five buses.

The fire at the Arriva Fox bus depot on Station Street in Wigston, Leicestershire started on Wednesday afternoon.

Homes were evacuated because of concerns that gas cylinders at the site might explode.

A 200-metre exclusion zone was set up around the incident by fire and police officials.

Steven Bruce, head of environmental health at Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, said the residents were being looked after until they are allowed to return home.

That is expected to happen later on Thursday.

Most of the people moved from their homes have spent the night either in hotels or with members of their family.

Three double decker buses and two mini buses were damaged in the fire.

About 40 fire fighters tackled the flames at the Arriva Fox Depot on Station Street on Wednesday afternoon.

The exclusion zone was set up that affecting Station Street, Blaby Road and the main railway line between Leicester and Birmingham.

Investigations are underway, but it is not yet known how the fire started.

No one was injured in the blaze.
