| Wednesday, 2 October, 2002, 13:00 GMT 14:00 UK Public inquiry into wind farm ![]() The turbines can be more than 300ft tall A public inquiry is being held into plans for a giant wind turbine project on the Fens in Lincolnshire. Planning permission for the 300-foot-tall turbines was refused but the firm behind the scheme, Wind Prospect, has launched an appeal. Colin Palmer, from the company, said: "It is often a small vociferous minority that opposes the wind turbines. "The vast majority are in favour of renewable wind energy but a few people spend a lot of time making a lot of noise." Resounding 'no' The appeal will involve an inspector from the planning authority hearing arguments from both sides. Officials at South Holland District Council had earlier supported the wind farm, but a group of councillors then voted 10-1 against the scheme. Delia Williams, from Deeping St Nicholas, a village on the Fens where the project would be located, said: "There was a resounding no to a postal referendum in the village." She added: "Why don't we use tidal power? It will ruin the whole vista and the Fens will be peppered with them." | See also: 15 Aug 02 | England 26 Jul 02 | England 03 Jul 02 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
