Buyers queue for cheap RAF homes
Homes at RAF Watton
The homes were affordable for first-time buyers
A batch of 35 cheap homes on Ministry of Defence land has been snapped up within hours of going on the market.

Would-be buyers camped out for days at RAF Watton in Norfolk to be first in the queue for the two-bedroomed houses costing 68,500.

Among them were honeymooners Stephen and Tracey Rumsey, who slept in a van to be sure of getting a home.

Estate agent Karen Griffiths told BBC Radio Norfolk: "We opened the doors at 10 o'clock and we sold them by one-thirty."

Priced out

The 1960s former RAF homes were priced to be affordable for first-time buyers and were sold on Saturday on a first-come first-served basis.

Mr and Mrs Rumsey, who were third in the queue, had camped out since last Tuesday along with about 15 other groups of buyers.

The 20-year-olds had married 10 days previously but decided against a honeymoon so they could be sure of getting a home.

Speaking last Thursday, Mr Rumsey said: "The main reason we are here is because there is nothing in our price range around here.

"The main thing is to get the house and then we have all we need.

"We are definitely then hoping to go away somewhere."

Reserve list

Ms Griffiths, of estate agents William H Brown, said on Monday another batch of 35 homes would go on sale soon.

"Hardly anyone was disappointed.

"We've got six people who were unlucky on the day.

"They will be the first reserves for the next release and we are in talks with the Ministry of Defence to see when we can now release those."
