Among the penalties handed out by officers in the West Midlands since the scheme was started three weeks ago were 73 for threatening and abusive behaviour and 13 for wasting police time. The initiative allows officers to issue fines of up to 80 for minor offences. Leaders of West Midlands Police, which is one of four forces taking part in the scheme, say they are pleased with the new powers.
Chief Inspector James Andronov said: "The feedback we have received from officers is that these new powers are very welcome and many have said how beneficial the scheme is proving. "We are confident this will provide an effective way of dealing with the type of behaviour that blights the lives of communities throughout the West Midlands, providing a potent deterrent to would-be offenders." A total of 133 spot fines have so far been handed out. | See also: 12 Aug 02 | England 12 Aug 02 | UK 19 Aug 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
