Residents in a north London borough say urgent action is needed to stop a steep rise in gun crime.

In the last five months shootings in Haringey have soared by 50%.

Community leaders are calling for people to unite under an initiative called "Not another drop" which will work in close partnership with Haringey police and council.

The scheme, which was started in Harlesden last year, aims to get people working together to identify and resolve the problems that are facing the community.

'Regenerate Haringey'

David Fisher, a Haringey youth worker, told BBC London: "A lot of our young people in Haringey are dying.

"They don't have to die. Their lives are being cut short and we are just trying to take a stand as a community.

"We want our young people to live.

"We want their lives to be prosperous and we want to... regenerate our community and bring that sense of community back to Haringey."

To mark the beginning of the scheme, Haringey Peace Alliance has organised a debate - "The future of the Black Community" - which will be chaired by BBC London's Kurt Barling.
