Monty's the top mongrel
Monty and her owner Jacqui Cowley
"Top dog" Monty and her delighted owner Jacqui Cowley
An award dubbed the 'Crufts for mongrels' has been won by Monty, a black and tan cross-breed from Burntwood in Staffordshire.

And the award is doubly remarkable because Monty had earlier in his life been beaten and abandoned before being rescued.

The RSPCA dog of the year awards saw more than 60 heat winners converge on an animal centre in Kent on Saturday to battle for the top award.

Monty beat off challenges from runner-up Dizzy from Wolverhampton and third place Nelso from Burton-on-Trent.

It is the eleventh year the event has been held which sees dogs judged for their personality and relationship with their owner.

'Lovable personality'

The finals were held at the RSPCA's animal centre at Leybourne near Maidstone.

Monty's delighted owner, Jacqui Cowley, 19, said: "It came as such a surprise.

"He's a fantastic and lovable dog and he really did steal the limelight with his lively personality but I never expected him to win.

"I'm now looking forward to showing him off with his special RSPCA Dog of the Year coat at other shows throughout the year."

RSPCA vet Tessa Bailey, who was one of the judges said: "Monty is such a star and I'm delighted that he is this years winner.

Another of the judges, TV vet David Grant, said: "It was a fantastic day.

" With so many mongrels left unwanted at rescue centres around the country each year, it was great to see such wonderful support for the RSPCA and so many cross-breed dogs taking part in the competition, showing they make great pets."

A special coat embroidered with 'RSPCA Dog of the Year 2002' will now be handmade for Monty.

He and Ms Cowley will also be invited to attend publicity events throughout the year to promote cross-breeds.
