| Thursday, 5 September, 2002, 09:19 GMT 10:19 UK School fails safety inspection Derby's Sinfin Community School was unable to open for the autumn term on Thursday, after failing an inspection of building work carried out during the summer. Two science laboratories were refurbished, an office built and wall heaters and lifts installed. But senior staff, contractors and architects decided the school was not safe to reopen after carrying out an inspection. It is hoped the 970 pupils will be able to start school on Monday. Speed humps inquiry starts A major review of Derby's speed humps has started following complaints they are damaging vehicles and affecting the foundations of nearby homes. Local people, the emergency services, bus companies and cyclists are being asked for their views of the traffic calming measures in Boulton and Sinfin districts. The city council says the humps have helped reduce accidents. Residents elected a speed-hump protester in May's city council elections. Help for abuse victims Victims of domestic abuse in Derbyshire Dales and High Peak are to have a dedicated helpline. The special telephone service will put people in touch with advisers, the police, solicitors and refuges. It will be set up by the end of September. Organisers say it should encourage more people to come forward to get help. | Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
