Bus drivers and confused motorists faced some delays in central London on Monday as work on the pedestrianisation of part of Trafalgar Square continued.

The north road on the square was shut off to traffic on Sunday as part of the �25m scheme to improve the experience for people visiting the tourist attraction.

While the square attracts millions of visitors each year, the Greater London Authority believes it is being choked by traffic and needs to be more pedestrian-friendly.

By closing the road, visitors will be able to cross to the National Gallery without having to negotiate five lanes of traffic.

Motorists' confusion

But although posters and leaflets have been distributed to warn motorists of the change, some confusion was anticipated.

Derek Turner, of Transport for London, said: "It has been very well publicised but I am sure that a number of motorists will get confused over the coming week.

"We just hope that they will be a bit tolerant and recognise the benefits."

Those benefits include creating a new public space and a more "dignified setting" for St Martin-in-the-Field.

A new paved and landscaped area in front of the church should be completed by next year.

Four buses got caught out by the changes on Monday morning and had to be guided out.

Taxi driver Bernie May was among those navigating his way through the cones.

He told BBC London: "There's no road markings at the moment so it's a bit confusing.

"There seems to be wardens everywhere."

The GLA hope that, by reducing cars circling the square, it can improve the experience for Londoners and boost the capital's �8bn tourism industry.

Plans for Trafalgar Square include making it a centre for concerts, street entertainment, children's activities and other cultural events.

A new roundabout will be finished before the end of the year, buses will be given priority in the square's new traffic system and new coach stops are to be put in place nearby to cut down on coaches stopping in the square.
