| Wednesday, 28 August, 2002, 16:03 GMT 17:03 UK Police check into high street bank ![]() Police are banking on their latest plan to work Police in Leicester have opened their latest unit - in a high street bank. Each Wednesday afternoon, local beat bobby PC Steve Wilson will run his surgeries for two hours for local people. The police surgery, based at the Lloyds TSB bank in Narborough Road, is thought to be the first of its kind. It is hoped the service will reduce crime in the area by making it easier for people to get in touch with the police. The community co-ordinator behind the project, Lisa Woods, said: "We are trying to get into the community a bit more. "I suppose we are trying to enable people who are maybe a bit reluctant to come into police stations or a bit nervous about meeting police officers. "We are going onto neutral territory and I suppose adopting more of a corner shop approach to policing and community issues." | See also: 22 Jul 02 | England 08 May 01 | Education 27 Feb 01 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
