The Nottinghamshire hospital housing Ian Huntley is "not a holiday camp", a senior official has said.

Rampton secure hospital is treating the school caretaker who is charged with murdering 10-year-old schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

He has not yet appeared in court and is being held in the hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983.

The hospital's forensic services director, Dr Mike Harris, rejected recent suggestions the hospital had a holiday environment.

The hospital has good perimeter security

"It certainly is not a holiday camp.

"I don't believe any members of the public who are saying that, or members of the press who are repeating it, would want to spend their summer holidays here."

Mr Huntley, 28, had been expected in court on Wednesday but will not now appear until doctors decide he is well enough.

Dr Harris said the hospital was an "extremely secure institution".

"We have a large number of staff and the reason for that is not to provide holiday camp conditions, but to increase security in the hospital."

Dr Harris said the hospital's security was equivalent to that of a category B prison - the second highest level of security.
