| Tuesday, 20 August, 2002, 09:57 GMT 10:57 UK Diver dies on shipwreck trip ![]() A sudden change in pressure can cause the bends A diver has died, and his brother is seriously ill after the pair suffered the bends on a trip to visit a shipwreck. Graham Law, 40, and his brother Richard were among a party of divers who left in a boat from Brighton marina on Sunday. The pair who were diving "buddies" came to the surface too quickly and suffered the bends. Graham Law died in the incident off the coast of Shoreham. His brother is in a "stable" condition in hospital. Decompression chamber A helicopter from the Solent Coastguard flew the pair to hospital. Mr Law, managing director of a steel company, from Crawley, West Sussex, died soon after the accident. Richard Law, 37, from Caterham, Surrey, is in Whipps Cross Hospital in north-east London, where he has spent several hours in a decompression chamber. Divers suffer the bends when a sudden change in pressure causes gas to build up in the bloodstream. A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Both brothers were qualified and experienced divers. "The incident has been referred to the Health and Safety Executive. Brighton and Hove's coroner has been informed." | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
