The vineyard at the edge of an allotment in Wrens Nest, Dudley in the West Midlands is expecting to produce up to 70 bottles of white wine when it is harvested in October. Local residents began planting vines on an area of waste ground last year. The variety of vine comes from a part of Germany with a similar climate to the West Midlands.
Local people have also been helped by Martin Vickers, of Staffordshire's Halfpenny Green Vineyards. Mr Vickers told the BBC: "People do think that vines can just be planted and left to it, but they do need a lot of attention. "I came in and tried to help out." Local resident Frank Hanson, a milkman and vine grower, said early indications are that the wine will have a good taste. | See also: 24 Aug 01 | Business 21 Jun 01 | Business 10 Jun 99 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
