Witnesses traced in missing girls hunt
CCTV pictures
Four people may hold the key to the case
Police hunting missing schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman say four people seen on CCTV footage have come forward.

The potential witnesses were interviewed in the hope they could give vital information about the girls.

The two men and two women were seen moments after girls believed to be the missing 10 year olds were seen in a sports centre car park in Soham, Cambridgeshire.

A motorcyclist and the owner of a white van also seen in the car park have not yet made contact.

There were a flood of telephone calls to the police following a CCTV appeal but detectives are appealing for further help.

Det Supt David Hankins, of Cambridgeshire Police, said the four had now come forward.

"They are perfectly innocent members of the public who were engaging in some sporting activity. They walked past them [the girls].

"They didn't engage in conversation. The two children were happy and healthy."

The appeal was made earlier for four people seen on CCTV getting into two cars in the Ross Peers sports centre car park at 1817 BST to come forward.

The police have also revealed more unconfirmed sightings of the girls, which suggest they were last seen walking southbound on a main road out of the village.

The girls have not been seen since Sunday evening.

The pictures were taken shortly before the last confirmed sighting of the two girls - by four separate people at 1830 BST near the town centre.

They show the two girls walking across the car park, past the sports centre.

Then about a minute later, the group enters the picture.

The CCTV pictures support the four sightings of the girls walking along Sand St, the lower end of the main street, towards the town centre, at 1830 BST.

Staff at the sports centre told BBC News Online that Holly and Jessica had come in to buy sweets at a vending machine at about the same time.

Another four people claim to have seen the girls near the village war memorial about 15 minutes later.

The latest reported sighting is of the pair walking down the A142 on the outskirts of Soham, towards Newmarket, at 1900 BST.

Valentine plea

A school caretaker who spoke to the girls at 1745 BST said they seemed happy.

Ian Huntley, 28, site manager at Soham Village College Secondary School, said: "They haven't run away. They didn't have a care in the world."

Holly's friend Sean Flack has appealed to anyone who may have abducted the children.

DS Hankins: abduction 'likely'

Holding a Valentine card which she made for him, the 10 year old said: "Let them go, just let them go."

Express Newspapers has offered a 1m reward for information, and businessmen and other newspapers have offered a total of more than 200,000.

DS Hankins broadly welcomed the rewards but emphasised the need for accurate information.

Tests are being carried out on a white van seized from a caravan park in Wentworth, about 10 miles away from Soham, after reports a vehicle was cruising the area on Sunday night.

More than 250 officers, including 60 specialist search experts, spent Wednesday checking waterways and river banks for clues.

  • Both girls are described as white, about 4ft 6in tall and slim. Jessica is tanned and has shoulder-length brown hair while Holly is fair and has blonde hair.

They were both wearing Manchester United shirts at the time, and police have asked other youngsters in the area not to wear anything similar, to avoid confusion.

Police have issued a dedicated telephone hotline for the public to call on 01480 422982.
