Sticky paint to curb vandals
Graffiti
Vandals have caused thousands of pounds damage
A special anti-climbing paint is being used by a city council to stop vandals from targeting a community centre.

Derby City Council spent almost 18,000 last year to remove graffiti, replace windows and repair the roof of Field Lane Community Centre in Alvaston.

But after meeting with local residents, the council has decided to spend a further 27,000 on better protection, including fencing and the anti-climb paint.

The paint remains sticky and is difficult to remove from clothing, and is aimed at deterring vandals from climbing or entering buildings.

Closure threat

The paint will be applied to the roof and exterior walls of the centre.

The building will also get specially hardened glass for its windows, and stronger doors.

The move comes after the centre was almost closed earlier this year because of escalating repair costs.

Paul Bayliss of Derby City Council says he hopes the measures will encourage more people to take advantage of the centre, which should in turn prove a deterrent to attack.

Local groups, including the Field Lane Football Club, a bingo club, a play scheme and an art class, have pledged to make sure it is used regularly.

Field Lane FC chairman Victor Venus said: "We've been here for 20 years and want to keep our roots here."

Most of the work should be completed within a month.
