| Thursday, 25 July, 2002, 19:34 GMT 20:34 UK Call to curb motorbike deaths ![]() Emergency services are worried about bike crash deaths A campaign aimed at cutting the number of motorcyclists killed or injured in crashes on North Yorkshire roads has started. Since the beginning of the year, 16 bikers have died and 85 have been seriously injured while a further 91 have been hurt. That is already above the county's average yearly bike crash death toll of 14. North Yorkshire Police say those most at risk are "born again" riders who have just returned to motorcycling and riders of high-powered superbikes.
The campaign has also been backed by relatives of victims who have urged motorists to be more careful. Eleven-year-old Rachel Stead, whose father Paul was killed in a bike crash last April, said: "My father used to take me for rides and I always felt safe. "But there were times he would have to take evasive action because of an inconsiderate car driver. "It really hurts to lose someone special." North Yorkshire Police's Assistant Chief Constable Peter Walker called on families to put pressure on bike riders. He said: "Urge them, please, to take care, to be sensible, not to take risks and to come home in one piece." | See also: 08 Mar 02 | UK 01 Oct 01 | England 19 Dec 00 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
