Baltic gallery springs a leak
Tha Baltic
The Baltic has also suffered problems with fire alarms
Tyneside's 46m Baltic contemporary arts centre has sprung a leak.

Less than 10 days after the prestigious arts complex opened its doors, visitors are being greeted with buckets because of a leaky roof.

The Baltic has already suffered problems with its fire alarm system, which has led to evacuations.

Officials say they hope to plug the leak in the centre's ornate glass roof soon.

Art 'undamaged'

The entrance to the Baltic was waterlogged after heavy rain on Saturday night.

Baltic director Sune Nordgren admitted the leak was "embarrassing" and "unacceptable".

Mr Nordgren said no art had been damaged.

A spokesman for Gateshead Borough Council, which owns the former flour mill building, said the authority would be talking to contractors to ensure any work is done properly.

The Baltic Centre attracted 30,000 people during the first week.

Earlier this month thousands of people had to be evacuated and the building closed for several hours after overheating in the kitchens set off fire alarms.
