Less than 10 days after the prestigious arts complex opened its doors, visitors are being greeted with buckets because of a leaky roof. The Baltic has already suffered problems with its fire alarm system, which has led to evacuations. Officials say they hope to plug the leak in the centre's ornate glass roof soon. Art 'undamaged' The entrance to the Baltic was waterlogged after heavy rain on Saturday night. Baltic director Sune Nordgren admitted the leak was "embarrassing" and "unacceptable". Mr Nordgren said no art had been damaged. A spokesman for Gateshead Borough Council, which owns the former flour mill building, said the authority would be talking to contractors to ensure any work is done properly. The Baltic Centre attracted 30,000 people during the first week. Earlier this month thousands of people had to be evacuated and the building closed for several hours after overheating in the kitchens set off fire alarms. | See also: 19 Jul 02 | England 15 Jul 02 | England 11 Jul 02 | England 11 Jul 02 | Entertainment 11 Jul 02 | England 17 May 02 | UK 04 Apr 02 | UK 25 Jan 02 | England 12 Oct 01 | Entertainment 03 Apr 01 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
