Fresh Tube strikes which would bring travel chaos to London are being threatened in a dispute over pay.

Millions of London Underground (LU) passengers faced major disruption to their journeys last week due to a one-day walkout by members of the Rail Maritime and Transport union (RMT).

The action brought the network to a virtual standstill in a protest over the safety implications of the public private partnership (PPP) to run LU.

But train drivers could soon be asked to vote over taking industrial action in a further row about pay.

'Substantial' rise

LU has increased its offer by 0.2% to 3.2% in a two-year deal which would give a rise of 3% the following year.

Unions want a "substantial" rise for their members, but LU has warned the offer is all it can afford.

Aslef, the drivers' union, is expected to discuss the call for industrial action which could lead to a ballot of its members.

Meanwhile the RMT has not ruled out more strikes in the dispute over safety.

During the last 24-hour strike only 10% of Tube services were running.

Many of the three million people affected opted to catch the bus, take their cars or walk to work.
