| Friday, 12 July, 2002, 18:51 GMT 19:51 UK Disgraced Archer to appeal ![]() Jailed peer Jeffery Archer and his wife Mary Disgraced peer and former Tory MP Jeffrey Archer is appealing against both his sentence and conviction for perjury and perverting the course of justice. The millionaire novelist and Cambridgeshire peer was jailed for four years at the Old Bailey in July 2001. After a six-week trial he was found guilty of for two counts of perjury and two of perverting the course of justice. The prosecution had alleged he lied during a 1987 libel trial against the Daily Star, at the end of which he was awarded �500,000 in damages.
It is not yet known what his grounds of appeal will be at the Royal Courts of Justice on 22 July. As at the Old Bailey trial, Archer will be represented by top QC Nicholas Purnell. At he day-long hearing Archer will be renewing an application to appeal against his conviction as well as challenging his sentence. Party chairman It will be heard by Lord Justice Rose, Mr Justice Colman and Mr Justice Stanley Burnton. Archer, who was created Lord Archer of Weston-Super-Mare in 1992, was Conservative MP for Louth, Lincolnshire, between 1969 and 1974 and eventually rose to become chairman of the party. When he was jailed, the now 62-year-old peer, who grew up in Somerset, was living with his wife Mary in Grantchester, near Cambridge.
