The parents of children whose organs were retained by Liverpool's Alder Hey Hospital take their campaign to the High Court on Monday.

The pressure group Pity II, which represents the affected families, wants a judicial review into the General Medical Council's (GMC) decision not to discipline all the doctors involved in organ retention.

Pity II claims that the GMC did not properly investigate doctors before dismissing complaints against them.

The hearing is expected to last two days.

Professor van Velzen was convicted in Canada

The Redfern Report, which came at the end of a long investigation into Alder Hey, named a number of medics, but only two faced disciplinary action.

One of those, Professor Dick van Velzen faced criminal charges in Canada over another organ retention scandal.

He pleaded guilty to improperly storing a child's body parts and was placed on probation.

Pity II now wants a judicial review to investigate the GMC and how it came to reject accusations made against other named doctors.

This is the first time the GMC's disciplinary procedures have come under public scrutiny.
