Mascot wanted to monkey around
H'Angus the Monkey
The new H'Angus the Monkey must be "extroverted"
A football club is on the hunt for a new monkey mascot - after their last one was elected mayor of Hartlepool.

Stuart Drummond hung up his H'Angus the Monkey suit after being elected to the 53,00-a-year post in May.

He ran for the post dressed as H'Angus and offered free bananas to all schoolchildren as part of his manifesto.

Hartlepool United is now looking for a new "extrovert" to step into the role.

They have got to be outgoing and a little bit extrovert - it is not a case of wandering round in a suit

Maureen Smith, Hartlepool United

Mr Drummond fought off competition from the mainstream parties to win the election for mayor of Hartlepool last month.

The former call centre worker was forced to give up his mascot hobby at Hartlepool United after his win.

Mr Drummond's exuberance for the job saw him get on the wrong side of the game's officials on more than one occasion.

H'Angus was ejected from Scunthorpe United's ground last season for simulating sex with a female steward and got into trouble on another occasion for bringing an inflatable doll on to the field.

Maureen Smith, senior administrator at Hartlepool United, said: "Stuart was very good. He was very popular.

"We have invited applications to replace him. They have got to be outgoing and a little bit extrovert - it is not a case of wandering round in a suit.

"Whoever does get the job will be expected to be responsible for the image of the club and must at all times conduct themselves in a manner which will not reflect badly on the club."
