Sunny weather added to a carnival atmosphere as large crowds gathered in front of the big screen at Centenary Square. Broad Street, the heart of the city's entertainment zone, was closed to traffic, allowing good natured groups draped in the cross of St George to roam freely. Fans remained positive after the match, revelling in the sense of occasion.
Rachel Lally from Birmingham was already looking forward to the next game. She said: "I thought England played extremely well for most of the game. "They didn't have the best second, half but we are still in a good chance." Hundreds in Centenary Square were in good spirits and fine voice with support coming from unexpected directions. Bob Harris from Scotland said: "This is the first time I've ever found myself shouting for England. "But the atmosphere is fantastic and everybody is up for a great time." Bank Holiday In the Sports Cafe on Broad Street, disappointed supporters were quick to analyse the match. Jim Ellis, from Birmingham, felt Beckham's substitution had been crucial. He said: "It changed the way the team played. "Heskey shouldn't have been on the left wing, that will have to be changed for the next match." After the final whistle hundreds of fans spilled out onto Broad Street to swap opinions and enjoy the rest of the Bank Holiday. | See also: 02 Jun 02 | England v Sweden 02 Jun 02 | England 02 Jun 02 | England Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
