The gypsies had been staying in caravans on grounds owned by Eton College since Tuesday last week. Thames Valley Police said the travellers had moved on from an area near Dorney rowing lake to a field in Taplow. Adrian Harris, estates manager at Eton, said the gypsies had left a "horrible" mess that would be very expensive to clean up. Horseracing fans Mr Harris said: "The aftermath is awful - there's a pile of rubbish and plastic bags and the contents of the hedges is pretty indescribable." "This has been a nuisance and an expense - we are going to have to get outside contractors for the clean-up." Following the gypsies arrival last week the college began civil proceedings to have them removed. The travellers tried to thwart the legal proceedings by moving from their original site to a new camp near the rowing lake. The gypsies believed the college would be required to get a new eviction order every time they moved. But on Wednesday Slough County Court said the order was not limited to the original field but related to all college land. The police then also issued an eviction order, believing the gypsies were guilty of criminal damage. The group, who say they are in the area for the Epsom Derby horserace, have now moved to a field near Institute Road in Taplow - about five miles from Eton. | See also: 24 May 02 | England 23 May 02 | England 22 May 02 | UK Politics 31 Aug 01 | UK Education 02 Jun 01 | UK Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
