| Tuesday, 28 May, 2002, 18:36 GMT 19:36 UK Coach stranded on cliff edge The driver and passengers scrambled to safety A coach was left hanging off a cliff on the Isle of Wight after careering off a main road. The driver and 29 passengers scrambled to safety after the accident near Ventnor just after 1100 BST on Tuesday. The Seaview Services coach, which had been travelling from Wroxall to Ventnor, is thought to have had a party from the West Midlands aboard. The 12.5-ton coach was left stranded over a 15-feet drop above a private garden. Shocked tears Jill Wheeler, 61, returned from a shopping trip to see the coach perched over her garden. "I couldn't believe it. The shock made me just burst into tears. "Fortunately no one was in the house at the time." A Hampshire Police spokesman said the driver and passengers escaped through a rear door of the coach. None of the party was injured but the group was then taken to Ventnor police station to warm up, according to a police spokesman. No injuries The coach had been travelling along Ocean View Road and Upper Gills Cliff Road when the accident happened. Police and fire crews evacuated nearby homes and businesses while recovery teams tried to make the vehicle secure. A crane was brought in to remove the coach. What caused the coach to leave the road is unknown. | Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
